Ear eczema can be an extremely irritating and, at times, painful condition. It can range from slight dryness behind the ears to extensive skin loss, soreness and infection. There are a number of causes of ear eczema and it is always best to consult your doctor if you have it, to get effective treatment and prevent your eardrum from becoming infected. Eczema can affect the external ear canal, which leads to the inside of the ear and the eardrum. Inflammation of this area of the ear is called Otitis Externa. The ear-folds are also a target for eczema, either around the inside or behind the ear. Several different types of eczema may affect the ear. These are listed below: Seborrhoeic eczema This is one of the commonest types of eczema seen in and around the ear, which can affect babies, children and adults. The skin appears red and scaly and there is often dandruff as well, which can vary in severity. There may also be a rash on other parts of the face, such as, around the eyebrows, eyelids and sides of the nose. Seborrhoeic eczema can become infected. Atopic eczema This is another common type of eczema, which frequently affects the ears, behind them in particular. Like seborrhoeic eczema it can affect babies, children and adults. The skin is red, dry and itchy and can easily become infected, especially if scratched and when broken skin is evident. Allergic contact dermatitis Ear eczema may appear as a result of your body reacting to a particular substance to which you are allergic. Everyday items that can cause allergic contact dermatitis around the ears include the following: earrings especially if made from cheap metals or a mixture of metals containing nickel; hair dyes, perm solutions, nail varnish, cosmetics and perfumes; medicines applied to the ear, such as ear-drops; tight-fitting glasses frames either plastic or metal; hearing aids, headphones, telephone receivers, ear-pieces from personal stereos; bathing caps, hair nets, hair clips ...
